Mathura-Vrindavan
Braj-Bhoomi is richly interwoven with the
legend of Lord
Krishna. Lord
Krishna, a symbol of Love, Peace and
Harmony.
Mathura,
traditionally recognised as the capital of
Braj-Bhoomi, is the land where Lord Krishna
was born and spent his youth. The Twin city
of Vrindavan, 15 km. away, is integral to
the legend of Lord Krishna. This is the
place where Lord Krishna played his flute
and performed his many leelas (acts).

Mathura
The
city of Mathura, the nuceus of Braj-Bhoomi
, is located at a distance of 145 km
south-east of Delhi and 58 km north-west
Agra. Mathura has picturesque 25 ghats along
the river and a series of temples, pavilions
and steps leading to the water's edge,
extending along the right bank of the River
Yamuna.
In Mathura there is "Katra Keshav
Dev" , the birth place of Lord
Krishna. Another beautiful shrine, the Gita
Mandir, located on the Mathura-Vrindavan
road has a fine image of Lord Krishna in its
sanctum. The whole of the
Bhagwat Gita is inscribed on the
walls of this temple.No pilgrimage to
Mathura is complete without a visit to its
kunds (Religious water bodies).

Places of Interest :
Gokul The
most celeberated of Shri
Krishna's
adobe, Gokul
is 15 km south-east of Mathura.
It
is here that Lord Krishna was brought up in
secrecy by Yashoda.
Mahavan:
Around
18 km from Mathura, lying on the left bank
of the River Yamuna,
is the large shrine of Mathuranath.
It is famed for its
Chaurasi Khamba
( 84 pillars).
Baldeo
:
Baldeo
is 20 km west of Mathura . It derives its
name from the famous temple dedicated to Balram,
the elder brother of Lord Krishna.

Govardhan
Govardhan
is situated 26 km west of Mathura on the
state highway to Deeg. A famous place of
Hindu pilgrimage is located on a narrow
sandstone hill known as
Giriraj. The young Lord Krishna is
said to have held Giriraj
up on the tip of a finger for 7 days and
nights to shield the people of Braj from the
deluge of rain sent down by
Lord Indra.

Barsana:
Barsana
is 50 km to the north-west of Mathura and 19
km north-west of Govardhan.
It is situated at the foot of a hill that is
named after Brahma. Barsana was once the
home of Radha-Rani,
Krishna's
beloved and consort. Barsana is famous for
its " latthmar
Holi " ( a festival of
colors ).
Nandgoan
:
Nandgoan
lies 8.5 km north of
Barsana. It was the home of Lord
Krishna's foster father, Nand.
On the top of the hill is the spacious
temple Nand Rai.

Radhakund
Radhakund
is just 5 km north of Goverdhan
and 26 km from Mathura. Radhakund
is a large lake, where Lord Krishna
is said to have killed Arista- the bull
demon.
Vrindavan:
Vrindavan
is 15 km from Mathura,
better known as the playground of Lord
Krishna. This is where he used to
perform "rasleela'
with the 'gopis'
(milkmaids). In Vrindavan, there are around
4000 temples, the most popular ones are :- Banke
Bihari Temple, Madan Mohan Temple, Jugal
Kishore Temple, Govind Dev Temple, the
ISKCON Temple, Rangji Temple etc.
